Calls to rename iconic sculpture as “Mall’s Balls” deemed “sexist and gendered”

DAN SCHMIDT

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD?: Since 1977 Adelaide’s pair of big balls have been proudly on display for all to see. However, Adelaide’s “Mall’s Balls” may soon undergo a name change due to mounting pressure from the public.

In a wave of very real cancel culture that is sweeping the nation and definitely not played up by the media for online engagement, it seems not even the pride and joy of Adelaide can escape scrutiny.

An online petition has been started to rename the “Mall’s Balls” to the “Rundle Rounds” in Rundle Mall, Adelaide CBD’s main shopping precinct and home of cringeworthy tiktok videos.

The founder of this petition, Lacinta Chripplejay, has stated on change.org “The term “Balls” is too gendered and outright sexist. This sculpture should be named something gender neutral like the “Rundle Rounds” or the “Shopping Spheres” as to not offend anybody”.

Principal Manager of Rundle Mall sculptures and tiktoks, Mal Rundall, told the Adelaide Mail ‘This is certainly something we would consider to ensure Rundle Mall is an inclusive and inviting place for all’.

Whilst the Adelaide Mail must remain impartial to public opinion, we would certainly hate to see this petition shared and seen by individuals for which it would cause much undue anger and outrage.
